Top 5 Coffee Myths – Debunked

Myth 1: Coffee Stunts Your Growth

Have you ever heard the old wives tale, “don’t let your kid drink coffee it will stunt their growth!” A contributing factor to this myth was an early study linking caffeine to reduced bone mass and osteoporosis. The problem with these studies is that they were done on the elderly and their diets were low in calcium. A more recent study, according to O’Connor, which focused on 81 adolescence showed that there is not a connection between coffee consumption and height.

Myth 2: Coffee is Bad for You

When I am drinking coffee people say this all the time: “You drink to much coffee, you’ve got to stop, it’s so bad for you.” As we have revealed before, in 3 Reasons Coffee…, coffee is quite good for you in many different ways. In steep contrast to this myth is the fact that coffee can help prevent a huge number of diseases. So the next time someone tells you to stop drinking coffee just tell them why they should start!

Myth 3: Coffee Causes Ulcers

If you drink coffee as much as I do you then you have not doubt had someone say to you, “Coffee can give you ulcers…” Recent studies have shown that most ulcers are caused by a bacteria called, Helicobacter pylori. The ulcers caused by this bateria can easily be cured with an antibiotic. Coffee can however irritate an ulcer that is already there but plays no part in actually giving them to you.

Myth 4: The Refrigerator keeps coffee fresh

This myth is probably one of the most common coffee myths I run into. The thinking goes: Coffee quality is hurt by light, moister and air; so if I put it in the refrigerator it will protect the coffee from those 3 dangerous elements. Though the thinking seems sound, it is just not true. There are a number of reasons why the refrigerator is a bad place to store coffee, one is that it is porous and will absorb the food odor and moister. If you are a purist and want to preserve the coffee’s natural notes this is a deal breaker. The best place to store coffee is in a cool dry place and in an airtight container.

Myth 5: The Best Coffee Comes from Italy

Coffee is actually not grown in Italy, unless it’s indoors. The fact is, Italy is famous for coffee because of it’s dedication to roasting and quality tasting espresso. There are no doubt coffee shops in Italy which don’t offer quality espresso but in an environment as competitive as Italy those shops probably don’t last very long.

Do you have Myths you have heard about coffee? What are they, are they true? Find out in the comments…

Myth 6: You can drink too much coffee.

This is simply untrue, coffee can be consumed non-stop morning, noon and night with no harmful effects. Some of the greatest minds drink coffee 7x24x365 and it only helps them.

Good to know I won’t incur any health defects from drinking a plentiful amount of coffee in the morning. When it isn’t coffee its beer or water. I think the craft coffee mentality is similar to the craft beer mentality. In fact some of my favorite beers are brewed with coffee or coffee beans. Great post.
