QOTD: Yes I have used a Percolator a lot. And many different models. Sadly the quality of the brewing is uneven and each and every model need to be tuned so to say. It is all about how many cups you brew really and how much coffee to use. And it is a fine balance, another thing that affects the brewing is the water quality,
I have used a Percolator in many different locations in Sweden, United Kingdoms(England), Spain and Germany. And the water quality is really not that good outside of Sweden, it is depending on the water cleaning and how much they have to process the water at the water treatment facility, depending on the pH levels in the water and how soft or hard the water is.
The process begins by adding a so-called precipitant, usually aluminium sulphate. This means that small particles suspended in the water stick together (flocculation). Then they sink to the bottom (sedimentation). This is the chemical step. The water may then pass through a filter consisting of charcoal or sand. Lastly, add some lime or acid in small amounts to regulate the pH of the water. Many water utilities also add chlorine to prevent bacterial growth in the pipes.
Depending on how much aluminium sulphate and chlorine they use for the water treatment affects how clean the water gets before the filtering, and lastly the chlorine levels can really ruin the brew no matter what method you use. I recommend all of you to get a filtering system installed in your home to get a really clean and good water quality.
Just my 2 cents on the matter
