You’re very brave, besides trying the Iced Coffee last week from 7-Eleven, I’ve avoided their coffee for a while. As far as McDonald’s I like some of their other drinks like the Iced Mocha and French Vanilla flavored coffee, but I haven’t had just their regular coffee for in a year or two. I used to really like Caribou, but there’s zero near where I live now.
A really great video! I’ve heard horror stories about 7-Eleven coffee. Sorry you had to endure that. For some reason, McDonald’s coffee always makes me sick. What do you think about Dunkin Donuts?
Jason, great idea. Curious how much difference is the coffee and how much the brewing process. Thanks for confirming what I think most have assumed for a long time about the relative quality of “coffee” at various places.
And yes, your children are very well behaved. We always traveled at night when ours were that age so that they would sleep.
I enjoyed your video and thank you for it. Though, you might want to give 7-11 a second chance. Some stores are great and others are lousy.
I get a good cup of coffee at a 7-11 most every day. Far better than McDonalds, and on par with or better than Starbucks. Though 7-11 is definitely not as good as an established local coffee shop. Being frugal I appreciate the $0.99 price of a 12 oz cup, though as you demonstrated this price can be higher.
You must be selective. A busy 7-11 will have fresher coffee. To be clean on the inside, a machine has to be clean on the outside. Dirty machines mean bad coffee. Unfortunately outside appearance does not guarantee performance. If the store bothers to keep the machines outside clean most likely it keeps the inside clean.
If you are in a region with lousy water it may impact the 7-11 coffee, but not always. Again that clean test is usually a good one. Lousy water usually makes the machines dirty on the inside and outside.
Look at the varieties offered and pick one you think you will like. Occasionally, 7-11 stores offer Kenyan, Kona, and Ethiopian blends that are outstanding. Among its regulars, I prefer the “Dark Mountain Roast.” Others like the 7-11 exclusive blend or Colombian. The store no longer makes the Brazilian due to lack of demand. I’ve not tried either the Hazelnut or Vanilla, but they do have fans. My 7-11 also offers several syrups though I’ve never tried them.
I suspect 7-11 tends to skew its coffee toward the lighter blends favored by Americans. The Brazilian blend is a lighter coffee than I expected it to be. Did you check the description of the blend before you chose it? It may have kept you away from the Brazilian.
McDonald’s coffee is fairly consistent, I agree with your general assessment — not terrible in a pinch. With Caribou’s I’ve found great variation. In Minnesota, though I’ve yet to have a bad cup of Caribou.
@Gerard Hallaren – Thank you so much for you thoughts. You sound like a 7 Eleven regular. I will definitely give them another shot on my next road trip and blog about it because of your suggestion and positive experiences there. Thanks again Gerard!
Very cool idea for a video. Really enjoyed it.
