Coffee Stuff: I am not a paper cup

by Jason Coffee on October 27, 2009

I-am-not-a-paper-cup With the climate of today’s society and the huge Go Green phenomenon around the world people are looking for way to be more ecofriendly. If this is important to you then and you are a coffee drinker there is one obvious way you can do your part. In this post we will look at a few different alternatives to your paper cup. Starting with the DCI I am not a paper cup.

DCI I Am Not a Paper Cup

I have been hearing more and more about this non paper cup. So I had to check it out myself. From a little bit back it looks like your ordinary paper cup but apparently it is a porcelain cup with a silicone lid. The think the thing I like most about this cup is that porcelain is known for not effecting the flavor of your coffee and with plastic sometimes having a very distinct flavor this cup seems like a great option if you want to have a pure tasting cup of coffee while saving a few trees along the way. (did you like my run on sentence?)

Eco Coffee Cup

If you like the thought of the cup above but don’t want to spend more than about $10 then this might be a great option for you. This one is similar in style to the cup above but with the addition of a non paper sleeve for esthetics and fooling your friends. Though sometimes when you save on price you sacrifice on quality. But from the reviews I have read it seems that overall this cup gets a slightly elevated rating from the original, I am not a paper cup from DCI.

Whichever one you decide on you can gave comfort in the fact that both of these cup are microwave and dishwasher safe.

what about cups made of stainless steel?
i think they are more durable than the porcelain ones in rough environments
in germany, mc café had an promotion giving away mc café cups made of ceramic if you bought a maxi menu, but without a lid :-(

@nico – that sounds pretty cool. I will check it out. Though without a lid I am not sure it makes a very good travel mug. ;)

I am a huge fan of ceramic cups and these are some of the more creative I have seen. I am going to have to look for similar cups that are larger than either of these two as 11-12 oz is barely a good start when it comes to a travel mug. 12 oz might cut it when you are at home and can refill, but on the road; 20 oz minimum!

It’s worth noting that the “I am not a paper cup” is double-walled, like a thermos. Keeps it hot longer. I have toddlers and sometimes have to set my cup down for long stretches of time. This cup does a much better job than normal mugs at staying hot.

@Will Powell – that is so true! thanks for adding such a key point. How long have you had your cup?

I’d rather always have a porcelain cup, but I go to a big university…. that only offers really stale coffee or really burnt coffee (Starbucks) on campus. So I turn to steel with plastic on the outside, and use this French Press Travel mug…http://www.liquidplanet.com/estore/product.php?productid=192&cat=69&page=1
So far my only complaint is that with the French Press lid, there is no way to fully close it, so sometimes coffee can spill out the top. But it has a filter right at the mouth too, so I have never ended up with grounds in my mouth.
But porcelain definitely wins if I’m not using my cup as a brewer.
