How To French Press

In this post, we will show you how to brew a french press coffee. This is one of the best ways to make coffee. Though this is not the only way we brew coffee, we like to prepare coffee in a french press because it preserves many aspects of the coffee that other brew methods might underplay or mute. Plus Jason’s wife requests it all the time, so there is that…

How to French Press

What you’ll need to brew a French Press:

  • Coffee
  • French Press
  • Grinder
  • Kettle
  • Mug
  • Filtered Water

Prepare to brew coffee

1. Boil Water

We will need hot water to brew the coffee.

2. Warm Press and Mug

We want our french press and mug warmed up and ready to receive the coffee. This helps to ensure that our coffee stays hot longer after we are done brewing.

3. Weigh Coffee

We want to ensure the proportions are perfect. We will use 51 grams or 7 Tablespoons of coffee to ensure the perfect cup of coffee.

4. Grind Coffee

We grind coffee with a burr grinder. We use a burr grinder is to achieve a consistent and even grind thus ensuring proper and complete extraction of the coffee’s flavor profile. We grind to a Medium-coarse grind.

5. Bloom

When we bloom we are just ensuring that all of the coffee has gotten wet with 195 to 205 degree water. We bloom for a couple reasons. First because it prepares our coffee to be brewed and ensures we will get more even infusion. Second because it gives us an indication of how fresh the coffee we are using is. If the coffee blooms then we know we are using coffee that is fresh because it is still releasing CO2. There is however some debate as to the validity of blooming or pre-infusing coffee with water in a french press because it is a full immersion brew method. If you decide not to bloom then give it a good stir with a wooden instead.

6. Wait 1 minute

Be patient, it’s only 1 minute. We kill time by tweeting.

7. Fill Press with water

We are almost there! Once the press is full of water we put the lid on and yep you guessed it more waiting…

8. Wait 3 minutes

We know 3 minutes feels like forever. It situations like this we facebook.

9. Plunge

We do this slowly and with a sense of anticipation. If you have trouble getting the plunger to move downward just give it a little jiggle but be careful the water is really hot!

10. Enjoy Coffee!
