Homer’s Coffee in Kansas is probably best known for their free concerts on Friday Nights. Though I have been there a few times in the past, I usually just ordered tea in a kettle with a dessert, sat at a table and watched the band play. So I made a special visit to taste their coffee and to see what the environment would be like during the day.

My Experience
As I mentioned above I have been to the coffee shop in the past with my wife, Chassy, to hang out and watch bands play. Almost every visit has been an enjoyable experience. Visiting during the day proved to be a little bit different of an experience.
On this particular day, like most days, I wanted some coffee. I walked in and order myself a latte. As I milled around I noticed that there was seating up where the band was usually playing. I was handed my coffee and I zeroed in on the stage seating. I looked down at my latte, “looks o.k.” I thought. I looked around at the shop, “man this place is buzzing with people”. And I have to admit it was pretty cool sitting slightly elevated from the rest of the coffee shop where I had a pretty decent view of the whole place. Over to my right there was a kid, who looked like he felt totally at home, running around playing and walking up to people, including me, at their tables. (I got my goo goo gah gah on btw! He totally laughed.) As I sipped my latte it was about what I thought, below average but not totally undrinkable.

I started up my computer, found the Wifi, waited for the connection, waited a little longer, found connection, tried to load a page, unsuccessfully loaded 4 pages, successfully loaded my blog to try to write an article, and then sat for 30+ minutes with little to no success.
All in all this was a very enjoyable place to sit and hang minus the slow wifi and sub par latte. They had some comfortable couch seating, many 4 and 2 top tables, and a back room with a huge table for meetings. (which I found out has a separate, faster, Wifi connection.). Despite the obstacles I would try this place again. Hopefully the barista I get next time will have a little more skill under their belt otherwise this place may only have a spot on my calendar for the occasional Friday Date Night.

A bad cup of coffee is still better than a good cup of _________ , but at the prices that most specialty coffee shops charge it seems that there should be better quality. It seems that the quality of the cup and the price should have some direct relationship to one another. I hope that if you do go back to Homer’s there is another barista on duty that may have better skills. Maybe the coffee shop reviews should include barista reviews as well.
