What an awesome roaster.  I really like this whole concept. Thanks for posting this video and the link to their website.  I am always fascinated at the many innovative ways people find to not only roast coffee, but accomplish any routine tasks.

Wow, roasting coffee in the sun during the early morning breeze sounds like heaven! Well, as long as I have a cup in hand while I am doing it. ;)

And he clearly did have a cup of coffee in hand while he was doing it. I wonder what the capacity of the roaster is and how frequently they can roast subsequent batches.

The Helios 1, the roaster could produce one pound of coffee at a time.

The Helios 2 roaster could roast over 2 pounds of coffee at a time, and took just under 20 minutes per batch.

The Helios 3 mobile solar roaster could roast up to 5 pounds of coffee at a time, and easily folded up for travel.

Helios 4 is capable of producing up to 30 pounds of coffee at a time, with a batch taking around 20 minutes.

And they are going to build the Helios 5 next year.

I remember watching this video somewhere else. Very interesting. I think I will be ordering some of their coffee soon.

Kind of curious how the coffee tastes.  If there's a difference in taste or if there's none at all. Hmm that gave me an idea. Wink

The recommendation of the popper is accurate, but not entirely necessary.  My popper does not have the higher wattage and it worked fine for me. It did take a little longer to complete a roast, but that's not necessarily bad. The cardboard box scares me just a little as we are talking about temperatures >400 degrees.  Also, this guy could roast for Starbucks. He took the roast waaaay toooooo dark. I would stop the roast as soon as I heard the first few beans go into second crack (if not a little before), but the roasting technique was basically sound.  Also, his statement that getting them up to temperature and then down to temperature "as quickly as possible" is only half accurate. I agree 100% that you want to cool the beans just as quickly as you possibly can, but some beans (lower grown, less dense, larger beans) develop flavor better with a slightly more gradual increase in internal temperature.  Each bean is different so it would not be accurate to say you want to take every roast to temperature "as quickly as possible."
