I purchase most of my green coffee from either OurCoffeeBarn.com or Burmancoffee.com.  Both of these companies sell both wholesale and retail and provide quality beans at reasonable prices. I know that SweetMaria's is also quite popular among home roasters.

I like to support local, as much as possible/practical, so I've been buying my greens from JJ Bean (Vancouver) the past couple years.  When I want to get more exotic, I order from Sweet Maria's in SF – terriifc selection and Tom is extremely helpful with tips (suggested roast profile on each bag!).  Green Bean in Toronto is also good.

I did find out the other day that a local roaster here in Kansas City sells there coffee green for 10% above what they pay: The Roasterie. They get some great coffee.

I always prefer to support local businesses so if anyone knows of a local green bean supplier in the northwest Indiana region let me know.  This preference is one reason I buy from OurCoffeeBarn.  While they are not local in Indiana, they are within about 15 miles of where I grew up and where my parents still live today.  In that sense, they are local to me.  Pete is also quite helpful and even gave me a tour of the business when I was home visiting my parents last year.

I just started buying green beans from my local roaster Latitude 23.5 Coffee & Tea.  It helps to cut out shipping costs, plus their prices aren't bad.  Can't beat that. :)

When I find a coffee I really like I will buy 10 pounds at a time.  If I am trying a coffee for the first time, I will usually buy 2 -5 pounds so I have enough to give it a fair shot.  Besides, even if it is "bad" beans, it will still roast up better than "good" store bought coffee so I am never "out" anything.  When I go visit my parents I can pick-up from OurCoffeeBarn so I don't have to pay shipping.  I have a friend who home roasts and picks up beans about monthly, but I have not been completely pleased with the quality of the greens he gets.  Quality is worth it not only in roasted coffees, but in green coffee beans as well.  Having found a quality supplier I am reluctant to go elsewhere, but if I get good recommendations here I may be inclined to try.

I know that my local roaster, The Roasterie, sells their coffee green. I will probably use them when I start on this journey. Save shipping plus I haven't tried one from them I didn't like yet.

I am not sure of all their prices because when I call in for my order they give me the quote, but I just bought 5lbs of Colombian Tiwen at $4.50 a lb. and it depends on what coffee it is.

Yeah, the prices are all over the board.  If you want Jamaica Blue Mountain you can expect to pay around $25.00/pound.  A good 100% Kona will run you $17.00 – $18.50/ pound, but I have never paid more than $6.00/pound and that was for a Kauai Reserve.  I probably average $3.50/pound.  When I buy and have to have it shipped I order as much as I can afford so that the shipping does not add a great deal of expense per pound.

I just ordered some beans from this place in Tampa called Caracolillo Coffee Mill.  It was cheaper to have it shipped then to drive up there, but I will know in the next week or two what I think of the beans.

Also, the price of beans were not bad at all.

Will post back later with results.

Jamie, I would be curious to hear your thoughts. I have purchased from only a handful of suppliers, and there is one with which I do not do business because I just don't think their beans are as good as the beans I get from OurCoffeeBarn or Burman Coffee Traders. I have no doubts about the quality of Sweet Marias, but they are a bit more expensive, shipping is a bit higher for me, and OurCoffeeBarn and Burman Coffee Traders have earned my loyalty. About the only reason I can think of to go elsewhere is if those two do not have a varietal I would like to try.

If you try them Neil I would love to hear your thoughts. I also think it would be fun to hear you thoughts on selecting green coffee in a post.

I am trying to work something up, unfortunately my experience is that it is "hit-or-miss" and once you find a good supplier you just tend to stick with them.

oic, even a post on that experience of finding a good supplier and what to look for would be very valuable.

this is from my blog:

There are an increasing amount of vendors of green beans for home-roasters. "Information" is what I look for.

Freshness- Do they list the crop year or do they say that all of their beans are recent crop unless identified as aged. Do they state when they received the beans, because this will help you know how long you might be able to continue to store some at home. Do they tell you anything about how they store their beans?

Bean Details- I need more than the word "Colombian". Farm or Cooperative name, region, elevation, soil type, varietal, how processed, bean size or mixed sizes, chemical usage and amount of defect beans are all very useful bits of information.

Cupping Notes- Every coffee is unique and cupping notes can describe the individual characteristics of each coffee.

As stated by the SCAA (Specialty Coffee Assoc. of America):

"Cupping is a method of systematically evaluating the aroma and taste of coffee beans. It is often used by growers, buyers and roasters to assess the quality of a particular coffee sample. Proper cupping requires the adherence to an exacting set of brewing standards and a formal step-by-step evaluation process. A trained cupper generally looks at six characteristics:

  • Fragrance - the smell of beans after grinding
  • Aroma - the smell of ground-up beans after being steeped in water
  • Taste - the flavor of the coffee
  • Nose - the vapors released by the coffee in the mouth
  • Aftertaste - the vapors and flavors that remain after swallowing
  • Body - the feel of the coffee in the mouth"

Some local roasters will sell you green beans and should be willing to answer questions. Email on-line vendors if needed information is not on their site.

http://www.sweetmarias.com is an example of a *great* green coffee bean online vendor! Detailed information, quality and integrity.

I like Sweet Marias for getting great beans but have also purchased some beans from the Green Coffee Coop and the Green Coffee Buying Club

I actually started out home-roasting when I saw plastic bags of green Ethiopian coffee at the market in a transit villiage and tried roasting them on a pizza pan in my built-in convection oven.  I was driven outside and to the garage after that, but the hobby stuck.
