OfflineThat is quite an interesting piece of equipment. I know you said it was just tinkering, but did you have a set of plans or some model of something you had seen that gave you the inspiration for the project? I am not much of a tinkerer, but I really admire those who are.

I have been roasting coffee at home for over a year now. I have been using the Fresh Roast Plus 8 roaster and it has been mostly quite good. The roasting time is approximately 4 – 5 minutes – and I usually stop roasting as soon as the second pop starts. I have had a couple of problems with the roaster and it might be time to get a new one, but the only question for me is whether to get the newer Plus 8 model – which should be much improved – or another roaster altogether.
I like the whole process of roasting, the coffee tastes way better and the beans are much cheaper than roasted beans. I have found I prefer the Central and South American beans but I can buy beans from pretty much any region of the world if/when I want to.
I tend to make coffee for myself in a similar way to brewing tea (and drink it black) or for my wife and myself I use a stove top espresso machine and make lattes with foamy milk. Pretty much as good as the store if not better!
I recommend home roasting to everyone now although I realize some people just will not do so!

Most of my inspiration comes from the homeroasters.org forums. There are a few people on there, most notable RoasterRob and seedlings, as well as a few others who are really into the DIY spirit. I have the spirit, just not so much time these days. I started it, but then got too busy with family to really put a lot of money into it all.

Awesome. Perhaps we can provide you with some inspiration to get it rolling again.
