Do you roast your own coffee and why? 

 

I love roasting for fun, but I still leave it to the professionals at least right now to provide me with great coffee.

I do not roast my coffee at home, though I really want to start. With everything going on I just cannot seem to find time.Confused

I have been home roasting for nearly 2 years now and I would never go back. I have great freedom as to what coffees I want to try and how dark (or light) I want them to be roasted.  I love the control and the creativity of home roasting and I have never been disappointed with even the worst of my mistakes — which were better than almost any store bought coffee.

I would recommend it to anyone who truly loves coffee — not caffeine, but coffee.

I'm just outside of Chicago so I would guess somewhere between 8 and 9 hours, but if you ever come to any events in Chicago I'm only about 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour from the loop.  Maybe you could combine it with a trip to see the Intelligentsia roasterie.

Congrats on roasting for almost two years now.  I have to agree with the freedom of roasting.  It's nice to have control over your coffee.

 

I don't think I have ever made a bad roast, but I did buy an aged coffee from Sweet Maria's to roast and it had a ton of flavor, but aged coffee is really not pleasing.  At least not the beans I had.

@Jamie What didn't you like about the flavor profile? What region were they from? Has anyone else roasted aged coffee? What did you think?

The coffee was very aromatic. 

It had a really in your face pepper note, along with a clove note, and the worst of all was this mustiness in the coffee that was so unpleasing.  It was an aged sumatran coffee from an '07 crop.

I am hoping that something happened with roasting because the cupping score on Sweet Maria's was like an 87.9 or something.

See, that 's the nice thing about home roasting; next roast just take it darker and many of those flavors will disappear into the roast.  It may not be the best coffee you have ever had (it will be like Starbucks), but it won't be a coffee you dislike either.

I do now! Just roasted my 2nd and 3rd batches tonight and I am really excited about everything I am learning in the process!!! I started a roasting wall so everyone can track with me during my journey.

Sounds like the bug bit hard! lol. I thought you might enjoy roasting once you started doing it. I'm glad you are having fun with the roasting side of enjoying coffee as well, even though this probably will put me out of my "job" doing the roasting articles for CCN.

Out of curiosity, where is the "roasting wall" to which you refer? I am anxious to follow you on your roasting journey.

Ganda, roasting is not nearly as difficult as you might imagine or as you may have been led to believe. It is a great hobby not only for the fun of roasting, but for the fun of brewing and drinking once you have roasted.

I've been making a lot of comments tonight, jumping into the forum, but I've been roasting for about 4 years now total. Started on a popcorn popper, and now roast with a modified bread machine and heat gun for larger batches. I thought I had a video, but I haven't actually uploaded it yet. I'll have to do that.

 

My wish/current project is a DIY up to 5lb air roaster that uses propane, but it's been sitting for at least a year not doing much, but I'm hoping to start making some progress now that I've revamped my garage space.

Right now, after a few years, my favorite thing is that I can make the coffee how I like it. NOT underextracted, stale, gross store stuff. A good example is the award winning PT's coffee here in town. They're great, but I don't have the palate for their coffee. It simply tastes overly fruity and edges on bitter/sour for some of their roasts (they do have some ones I like). I like that I can take most things to a City+ to FC and get a flavor I'm very happy with.

Dustin, I 'd love to see some snapshots of what you do have so far on that propane 5lb roaster. I am curious though, are you interested in starting a small roasting company or why the need for a 5lb roaster?  I find that just over a half pound a week keeps me drinking the beans when they are at or very near their peak.

I wouldn't mind doing a small business, but it's more just because I kind of want to.. If I did go and do more with coffee, I'd have to have something that did more than a pound in around 20 minutes. So from that perspective, I'm just trying to see if it can be done.
