Since a few of the members have been or have recently started roasting their own coffee at home and have either given away or sold some I thought it would be fun to post reviews of those home roasts here in the forums.

This Topic is a place for you to post or to read the posts of others who have tasted and reviewed the home roasted coffee of other members of the forum.

I am going to start us off with a review of a home roast done by our own coffeeadventures.  Jamie sent me a bag of Yellow Caturra Maui last week.  This is a review of that coffee that I have shared with Jamie.

Jamie, I had my first pot of the Yellow Caturra Maui. I got a very pleasing fruity aroma with just a hint of spices.  On tasting the coffee, I would say that the fruity aroma made its way from the nose to the palate. I detected hints of pear and melon, a sweet type of melon, like honeydew or perhaps cantaloupe.  The finish on the coffee left me with light hints of apple and cinnamon, reminding me of apple sauce, apple crisp, or apple cobbler.  There was not a great deal of acidity to the coffee.  It had a fairly weighty mouth feel and was a pretty smooth cup with good body.  This was a very good cup of coffee.

Thanks for posting this Neil.  I am very happy you enjoyed this.  I will roast up another batch so I can give a detailed review of what I thought too.

I'm sorry, I thought you had already had some of Jamie's coffee. I would not have posted my review until after you had a chance to do a tasting had I known that. My bad.

Perhaps Jamie is planning something a little more citrus flavored for your review.

I finally got to try Neils coffee and here is my review…

The aroma was like being in the middle of the woods standing in front of a single orange or tangerine tree. I didn't know what to expect, so this threw me off and had no idea what it could possibly taste like.

Slurping, the coffee has a very pleasing snap from the citrus but completely mellowed by the hits of dark chocolate and overwhelming woodsy taste. It has a very thick mouth-feel, which I actually like, and the woodsy/chocolate lingers on the sides of my tongue with a clean citrus taste in the middle.

Overall I really enjoyed this coffee. I think I would enjoy it more iced, but I would still drink it hot. Once I got over the aroma,  the flavors were amazing and I could tell Neil was really paying attention to what notes to enhance during roasting.

If you don't mind a thick lingering taste, I totally recommend this coffee. I prefer it for the evening. I think it would also be better once he gets real coffee bags.

I'd give this 84/100 points. Which is pretty good for a newer roaster.

Jennifer, thank you so much for the review. I am glad that you enjoyed the coffee.  Point well taken about the coffee bags, but I had never before even contemplated that anyone would want to buy my coffee and for myself I roast in small batches (so I can have variety in my daily coffee) and I keep it in an airtight crock as well as the freezer bag.

Do you recommend that I buy the vacuum bags just for my personal use (a batch typically lasts me 5-6 days)?  I guess I didn't see that much difference since even the vacuum bags have the same type of seal once the bag is open.  I'd be happy to consider it if you think it would be advantageous.

Im happy to help.

When I get coffee, it goes straight into air tight tupperware. This helps tremendously as well.

I think CoffeeGeek was supplied an iRoast by Hearthware direct, and have been
very helpful in answering a range of technical and usability questions
we've had during the initial stages of this review. And i watch very cearfully he has
always had very good support and warranty services, even though in the
past their products have been used, abused, and pushed beyond the normal
design limits they were built to, by some enthusiastic roasters. This
service and support continues today.
