How do you take your black coffee? Do you add cream and sugar? Do you add anything else to it or do you take it black?

Quality coffee deserves to be appreciated for what it is, not for what cream or sugar add.  There are coffees that are so bad that they may actually beg for cream and sugar. I have never met a coffee I did not like, bugt there have been some I liked a whole lot less than others.

I agree AoE: Just last week I made a friend a cup of coffee via a Chemex and gave it to her black.  She insisted that she has never drank a cup of black coffee, that she always uses creamer.  After a little pushing she took  a sip of the brewed gold black and then went on to have her first cup of black coffee ever.  Amazing coffee and great preperation makes for an amazing coffee cup experience.

I am not sure I have had any real "converts" yet, but when people find out I roast my own coffee and ask me if they can try it I always say "yes," but I always tell them that there is one condition: they must first try it black. Most drink some and then add cream and/or sugar anyway, but every one of them tells me "Hey, that's not bitter" and most say that it is the best black coffee they have ever had.

I drink my coffee black. My father thought that if I was not allowed to drink coffee with milk or sugar, I would not pick up his habit.  But almost 20 years later (I started young) I still prefer it black.  The exceptions, I make is when the coffee is bad.  There some bad coffee out there.  Lets  take South America (you would think where good coffee comes from, people would drink good coffee on a regular basis), the people drink warm milk and add 2 teaspoons of Nescafe.  You never want to drink instant coffee black.   I now live in area "south" where people look at me weird because, I drink my Americano with no milk or sugar. So few people drink it black where I live.  I doubt I could convert anyone either.

I will generally take a first sip and judge from there. I overwhelmingly drink my coffee black, but sometimes I'll drop in a dash or two of fat-free half and half, or even a little sweetener. I like to mix it up…sometimes I just want a change, and sometimes the coffee quality demands it. Sometimes I crave an Americano, or a cappuchino, or a latte or if I am deaths door, a red eye or an espresso shot…it's all good…Viva la differance!!

Black now. Used to drink it with half n half, but I finally came to the conclusion black coffee is the way to go.  So glad I did.

I like my coffee with cream & sugar.  I've tried it without creamer (which isn't too bad) but I have a hard time giving up my turbinado.

@kibblesplace what kind of coffee do you drink? Have you tried giving up the turbinado and having only a little cream?

@Jason Surprised No turbinado?  I don't know if I could.  I even carry it in my purse in case the coffee shops are out of stock or don't carry it.

It sounds like you might enjoy some of the naturally "sweeter" coffees.  I have had some India Mysore Nuggets that was very sweet on its own without the addtion of any  cream, sugar, or other additives.  The "sweetness" also has somewhat of a molasses component to it that my resemble your turbinado.  It may be worth a try.  If you happen to win Jason's contest maybe I will roast those for you and you could at least try it without cream and turbinado.

I won his contest today!  Laugh  You roast your own coffee?  That is so cool.  Where in the world do you buy unroasted beans?

Congratulations! I work midnights so I miss the Monday and Tuesday shows.  Yes, I roast my own beans.  It is a great hobby, and gives me a chance to enjoy a huge variety of coffee at relatively low cost.  I am going to roast a pound for the winner of the contest Jason is running for 100 members in the forum.

I get my green coffee beans from a couple of different vendors on line.  One of my suppliers is OurCoffeeBarn, which is now a sponsor of CoffeeCupNews as well.  I am writing a series for ccn about my home roasting experiences.  It  may be shameless self-promotion, but you may find them interesting and hopefully even a little entertaining.

I drink my coffee black. But at times I add some cream, but that is only when I have some cake or some really nice homebaked bread. Never ever put sugar in my coffee, when I was a kid I used sugar but only 1 piece/teaspoon and some milk. I did quit using milk/cream and sugar when I were 14 or 15, cant really remember exactly. But since then I enjoy my coffee black.

The above goes for coffee served by me or trusted friends. That will say people that I know can brew a cup of coffee. If I drink coffee at a restaurant I always add some cream or milk to the coffee. Since they almost always have crappy coffee that is badly brewed and is getting old in the pot.

@Pat

I will will almost always do the same thing. First I taste it black to see what I think then if the flavor is not there I will add a little cream to smooth things out but even then the gross staleness or underextraction comes through in the slurp.

I drink it from the french press and then pollute it with that liquid vanilla creamer, I can't help myself that's the way I love it!!
