One time for my birthday my girlfriend bought me a half pound of Starbucks 100% Kona. To this day it is still the best coffee I have ever had. It was so incredibly rich and creamy tasting. Beyond anything I had tried before.

Question of the day: Which is my favorite Kona Coffee?

I’d have to say that of the Kona that I have tried, the best would be Kona Mountain Coffee. I had some of their Private Reserve and was pleased.

Just like my35 year old marriage, coffee sometimes gets boring to me. I’ve resorted to flavoring my home brewed coffee. Vanilla, Hazelnut, Mocha, Snickerdoodle! This is my first time watching the Tasting of Rocketfuel Hawaiian Kona Coffee. You sound caffeinated! But when you slurp that Kona, you are inspiring. You have a cute little dedicated face as you taste for the second time. “Shoot through the center of my tongue…” I liked that part. A sweet smooth video!

Kona coffee really is my favorite type of coffee, other than my regular Starbucks blend I drink on a daily basis. The Kona coffee is amazing for a treat during the day…..while my Starbucks blend has become essential to my literal existence! Nice tasting Mr. Coffee :-)

Hey Jason. Great job on this video. Always loved Kona coffee, and the best 100% Kona coffee I’ve ever tasted is one where I bought raw Kona beans and roasted them myself @ home. I love dark roast coast, and found raw Kona beans can retain its distinct flavor even through darker roast settings (resulting in less acidity too from my perspective.) Keep up the great work!

Back again….I forgot to add the answer to Question of the Day! The best Kona I’ve ever had was in Destin, Florida. There was a little coffee place right on the coast, about a two miles from our place…called the Bad Ass Coffee Company, named after the donkeys that carried the Kona coffee beans. They brewed ONLY 100% Kona coffee, and its the first time I tasted it, and it was so good….we had to walk there every day for lattes.

My favorite Kona is from Nacagodches, from a coffeehouse called Java Jacks. Their Sumatra is also really good!

    The best Kona!
I am a stuntman and was working on a film in Oahu with a local Hawaiian Stuntman from Kona. He and his family had been growing coffee for generations. He offered me some and of course I accepted. He apoligized when on the last week he showed up with a two pounds of unroasted Kona Beans. He gave me roasting instructions and I went back to the mainland. I roasted the beans to his specs and had the several months of the most memorable coffee I’ve known!

First time seeing you do a review. I love it. The best Kona coffee I had was in Hawaii and it was Lyons coffee. This is a great idea to review coffees. I am glad I found you on Twitter.

Kona was my first A.S. (After Starbucks) coffee love. Discovered it on the Big Island a number of years ago. It was easy to drink 5 cups over some family conversation. I liked it so much I would have it airmail from Hawaii (which wasn’t really that much more than I paided in Hawaii).

    Kona: What I know now

Kona is a great coffee. It is one of the rarer coffees in the world. However, the REAL reason you are paying $30+ per pound is that it is a U.S. coffee, and because of the U.S. labor standards, that have to pay the workers much more than they do in Africa or Latin American. Like Jason, I’m much more into a high quality African bean these days: Ethiopian, Kenyan AA, etc. But, Kona is in a league of its own. It is consistantly good coffee, and it is very easy on your stomach, unlike many Latin American coffees.

Note: if you are a home roaster, you can get Kona coffee at Sweet Marias and other places for about $15/pound–and it will be fresher (and much cheaper) than mailed coffee.

Also, a tip I learn in Hawaii: Buy Kauai coffee instead. It is half the price, usually, and tastes almost like Kona (just without the Kona name). Kauai and Kona are the two main coffee regions of Hawaii.

    Great video!

Great video. I learned a lot again.

Not too long ago I also discovered that waiting a few minutes makes the coffee taste better. Thanks for confirming that, I haven’t found a lot of instruction on how to best taste coffee like they have guides on tasting wine.

I’ve been hearing a lot about Kona and Rocket Fuel Coffee the past few weeks. I’ll have to give them a try very soon.

QOTD – Never had a Kona coffee yet.

I love %100 Kona. I’m in the Greenwell frams Coffee club. http://www.greenwellfarms.com/
I get the same every month, Peaberry-light roast whole bean. I loved their farm and coffee roasting the best. Just thinking about makes me want a cup right now.

    Sincerely,
    Carol

I just remembered the name of the restaurant in Honolulu where I drank the 57 cups of Kona: Bocca di Beppo.
