Eight O’Clock Coffee is a rising coffee star.

Posted on 26. Mar, 2009 by in News

Eight O’Clock Coffee did a promotion recently in which they gave away $5,000 in groceries and many other prizes. It seems this with a myriad of other reasons appears to have attributed to their rising coffee star status.

“We are about a 4.3 percent share of the coffee category in the (U.S.) grocery store, if you look at a 52-week period of time,” said David Allen, vice-president Marketing for Eight O’Clock, based in Montvale, New Jersey. Eight O’Clock Coffee is carried in 70% of all US groceries stores and towards the end of February that 4.3 percent share has risen to 5.5 percent of the coffee category in the (U.S.) grocery store.

With Americans watching their pocket books more closely and spending less overall at gourmet coffee houses, it makes sense that we would see a rise in grocery store coffee sales. It looks likes Eight O’Clock Coffee had great timing and this promotional push was a smart move during this recession.

Have you changed your coffee buying habits?

I used to get my coffee from Peets mail order. But since trying 8′Clock I am in love with it and is saving me a ton of $$. Sorry Peets!!

Definitely cut down buying coffee from Starbucks/similar cafes. Sticking with making coffee at home, for a fraction of the cost. Alas, can’t say the same for lattes, if I need my latte fix, I do sometimes cave.

I make coffee at home. I used to never make coffee at home because I worked at a coffeehouse. Now that I don’t I make some every morning. I’m thinking about buying a espresso machine because I miss it so much. I sometimes treat myself to late night lattes (with some honey, thats how i roll) …

I continue to be willing to pay more even now for a good cup of coffee. I have switched to a Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center certified Bird-friendly shade grown coffee.

Eight O’Clock tastes great and is very affordable. In my leanest years, I would buy the cheapest-per-pound coffee (and even used grounds more than once!), but I started buying Eight O’Clock even if it wasn’t the cheapest because it made such a great cup of coffee. Today I make a habit of buying new brands all the time, but there’s always a fresh bag of Eight O’Clock Columbian beans near at hand.

I used to buy Stumptown, Victrola, Zoka or Vivace. Now I get Costco Seattle Mountain Coffee. They only have it @ stores with roasters. 2.5 pounds for $10. It is very good. Not a lot of crema but they probably don’t use much robusta which builds crema.

I have absolutely changed my coffee buying habits in order to save money. I used to be a coffee snob, buying only the most expensive, designer roasts on the shelf and frequenting local coffee shops to buy my beans fresh. Now I take a different approach. I’ve recently tried the Folgers Gourmet Supreme, French Roast and Black Silk– all of which I found to be not bad. They don’t seem as robust as some of my favorites, but at dollars less, they’ll do :) I also purchased a bag of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee from an end-cap at Target (the only thing it did for me was make me wish I had a donut or two). It was also pretty good, but not my favorite. I’ll have to try the 8 O’clock Coffee– I always felt it had a negative “old person” stigma attached to it!

I have not gone to great lengths to change my coffee buying habits… I figure there are worse things I could be spending their money on. Some smoke, others get their nails done, and even more go out to lunch every day. Since I do none of those, I enjoy my daily sf vanilla nonfat latte made as hot as possible, and it puts a smile on my face :) Many times, my work involves meeting potential clients at a local coffee shop and other times I enjoy a cup and good conversation with friends… Needless to say, coffee has a permanent role in my life! I do brew coffee at home every morning as well, and we’re not picky about brands but we always grind our own beans. So after my fiance and I finish the morning brew I’ll usually make an afternoon coffee shop visit. Cheers!

I have been using Eight O’Clock coffee for 12 years now. It all started when I purchased a bag of coffee beans with a free grinder attached at Sam’s Club. When those beans ran out, I purchased Eight O’Clock whole bean at the grocery and enjoyed it soooo much and received so many compliments from guests that I continued using it. Occasionally I would buy another brand because of a sale, but I’m always disappointed because the flavor just does not measure up. These days I stick to the EOC whole beans and nothing else…it just makes my morning. Occasionally there are BOGO offers that I take advantage of…buying as much as allowed. I’m then stocked enough to wait for the next sale.

EOC should do a similar promo with the free grinder with like a 3 pack purchase, or with the large bag. They could win over new EOC coffee lovers!!

I switched to EOC whole bean after many years of drinking Folgers, and after being disappointed by Starbucks whole bean. EOC whole bean seems less acidic than Starbucks, which tastes over-roasted to me. EOC is the best all-around coffee I’ve tasted.

I do have one gripe though. EOC recently put on an essay/picture competition and the wining entry they ended up choosing was a poorly written, bland, and uncreative cyber-begging piece. I read several essays much more entitled to winning than the one they chose (and those didn’t even make it to the semifinals), which really makes me wonder if the whole thing was staged from the beginning.
