Chocolate Fish Coffee

So I really wanted to find the best coffee I could on this trip to Sacramento. About the only coffee I could remember from the Sacramento coffee scene was Starbucks and though they have their part to play I wanted to experience more.
Since moving to Kansas City and starting Coffee Cup News I have had the extreme pleasure of tasting some amazing coffee and meeting some really cool people that know their way around an espresso machine. I wanted to experience that in Sacramento.
After calling and surfing I had found a place that was not only recommended by customers via yelp on the internet but also recommended by a competitor in the area. This perked my curiosity. I pulled out my iPhone 4 typed Chocolate Fish in maps and I was on my way. Now if you follow the iPhone directions you will be directed to their mailing address, with a quick call to the number listed I was redirected to 3rd and Q.
As I walked in the door I was greeted with two huge smiles. As I placed my usual order, an espresso, I was asked where I usually get my espresso. I replied, “Kansas City” and almost immediately another barista from behind the counter said, “PTs?” I immediately felt at home as we continued riffing about the Kansas City coffee scene.
As I sat at my table with blazing wifi speeds, I sipped my espresso. It had a lot of very pleasing acidity and had a grapefruit/tangerine flavor with a chocolate tone on the back end. I was really enjoying myself.
At one point I was asked if I would like to try a couple samples of the coffee being brewed that day. As you can imagine, I definitely did and it was all really exceptional. As I sat at the table I was asked if I needed water, I said yes, and it was brought to the table I was sitting at. As you can see from the pictures the design and decore of the coffee house was modern, cool and clean. I was very impressed by the comfort of the establishment and the extra mile every barista went that was working that day at the Chocolate Fish.
I would without a doubt recommend you check out the Chocolate Fish and if you live or work near downtown Sacramento I am sure it will become a regular stop during your day.

Chocolate Fish? Did you ever find out the origin of the name? I’m guessing it must have been pretty awesome to warrant a 5 out of 5. Was the espresso a SO or was it a blend? Do you know what it was (assuming it was a SO)? It sounds like a pretty interesting flavor profile; a little like the Bali Krishna Blue Moon.

The espresso was a blend and it is the same coffee Michael Phillips used in the Barista Championships. Chocolate fish means: thank you or reward for a good dead, origin is New Zealand.

Chocolate Fish is awesome, if you can find it- there is an addressless sign on the wrong corner. I was also quite impressed with their coffee.
I can also recommend Temple Coffee and Old Soul Coffee, both in downtown Sac.

I totally agree with that assessment. Those are actually the last two coffee shops I reviewed here on CCN.

It is my first time to hear chocolate fish coffee. What is it made of? How does it taste? I am so curious.

So curious, it turns out to be the name of the coffee shop, not the name of some kind of coffee. You really know how to attract readers Jason ^^
