5 Ways To Boost Coffee Shop Sales: Part 4 – The Unexpected

light-bulb-ideaWay #4: Do The Unexpected

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

This is a fun one! When customers order coffee or other items from you. Give them a little something extra at now charge as surprise gift in the mailing. For Example: If they order a 1 lb bag of Kenya, throw a company mug in there as a thank you. They will probably end up calling you and asking about it. At which point you can tell them all about how much you appreciate their business and it’s just your way of saying thank you. This one will end up costing a bit on the front end but word of mouth is the fasted spreading way to grow your business.

Way #5: Special Events

This one can take a little doing to pull it off but if you can get your staff enthusiastic about it and get enough energy behind it then it can do wonders. It doesn’t even have to be anything big.

Here is an easy 3 Step Example

Step 1 – The Prepartion

Prepare 3 coffee tastings with pairings, print out an overview of each and make up some gift bags.

Step 2 – The Tasting

Welcome your customers, give them a brief overview of the coffees/products and why they are unique while they hold the flyer in there hand for more details. (maybe have a map on the wall showing the region that each coffee is from.) Do the tasting walking your customers through the steps to a coffee tasting. Ask customers for feedback and ask them what they taste. This should spark a discussion surrounding your coffee.

Step 3 – The Parting Gifts

Thank everyone for coming and have a Q & A after for the customers that want to go deeper. This is also your opportunity to wow you customers. Hand them their gift bag full of cool stuff: 1/2 lb of coffee, mug, samples, gift cards and whatever else. (As a side note I think you should do all of this at no charge to the customer.)

Final Thoughts

It is true that some of these ideas will cost you money. But if you are not willing to invest in your relationship with you customers what are you willing to invest it? This relationship will be the best invest you ever made. Remember there is NO substitute for a word of mouth buzz about your company. And like Garyvee says, “Twitter (social media) is like word of mouth on steroids.” The key in doing all of the above is to remember that you want to establish a long lasting relationship with each and every customer you come into contact with. The best way to do that is to wow them at every turn while remembering that there is little substitute to being geniune, available and approachable.

This is a lot of really great information gathered together very nicely. Thanks for sharing your formula for success with others. I hope that those coffee shops worthy of great success (the ones with quality products at reasonable prices) will implement some of these and become even more successful so that we all have more quality coffee shops to which we may go to enjoy the world’s favorite beverage.
